Make gift of life your resolution

9:08am Monday 8th January 2007

RESIDENTS are being encouraged to donate blood as part of their new year's resolutions.

The National Blood Service, which loses 15 per cent of donors each year through retirement, relocation and ill health, is appealing for new donors.

The cold weather and the holiday rush is being blamed for blood stocks dipping by up to 10 per cent over the Christmas period.

A spokesman said: "Many people don't realise blood products have a very short shelf life, as little as five days for some products which means our stocks need to be constantly replenished.

"We need to collect 8,000 donations every day to meet hospital demand.

"Deciding to become a life-saving blood donor is the greatest new year resolution you can make."
