A CHARITY worker has slammed claims that Erith residents are Britain's stingiest.

A national newspaper named the town's residents as the nation's meanest after a survey revealed only 43.9 per cent of them gave to two or more charities a year.

The figure, the lowest for any town surveyed, has led to Erith being branded as the skinflint capital of Britain. But information and support officer for the Alzheimer's Society, Vicky Wheatley, says she was surprised by the news.

She said: "I was shocked to hear this because it doesn't tie in at all with what I know about the people of Erith."

Speaking from the charity's offices in Erith's Pier Road, Mrs Wheatley said: "Residents in this area have been very generous supporting us in the past."

The survey of 600 towns, carried out by market research company Claritas Acxiom, named Marlborough in Wiltshire as the most generous town.

More than three quarters of locals there made donations to at least two good causes.
