SPECTATORS are wanted to join in celebrations to mark the formal handover of the Paralympic Games, from Bejiing to London.
To celebrate the handover in China on September 17, there will be a ceremony at the inter-borough athletics event on the same day, for adults with learning difficulties.
This is being held in the David Ives Stadium at Erith leisure centre in Avenue Road, Erith, and is one of the major London sporting events for people with learning difficulties.
More than 100 competitors from Bexley and neighbouring boroughs will be taking part and the 1,000-seater stadium has plenty of room for spectators.
Councillor Peter Catterall, cabinet member for leisure, arts and tourism, described the event as "fantastic and inspiring" and added "I hope the residents of Bexley will turn out in force to support the athletes and join our Paralympic handover ceremony."
The stadium is being considered as a potential pre-2012 Games athletics training camp, and the event is being sponsored by EDF Energy - an official London 2012 partner, the London Development Agency and Parkwood Leisure.
Competition begins at 10.30am and the handover ceremony is expected to start at 12.30pm.

The ReV', Erith says...
2:22pm Fri 5 Sep 08
One point though is if they are going to use it as a pre-Olympic training base are they going to replace the staff because when ever I've been there the staff are surly, too busy chatting amongst themselves and generally unhelpful, it's like a step back in time, also I got to say it's almost impossible to have a swim when you want for instance what with working and childcare Mrs.ReV' can only make Mondays and luckily it's Ladies Only BUT she's limited to 45 minutes.
So no chance of a nice long swim then
As for me as a man who works Full-Time the only time I can go swimming is a Wednesday because the rest of the time the pool is booked up. Hardly encouraging people to pop down the baths and get fit is it?
Words fail me at how awful the services and provision is at Erith (don't get me started on how much of a rip off merchant the Diving Club "Diving Unlimited" is).
Compared to this I almost miss the old pool!
