Affordable flats scoop prize

A DEVELOPMENT of affordable homes has scooped this year's Charles Burr award, presented by the Bexley Civic Society.

The annual award, set up in memory of the society member, is given to projects which improve the look of the borough.

This year's award was given to two blocks of homes for rent and shared ownership, built in Stonewood Road and West Street, Erith, by housing association Orbit.

The 55-flat development was built in two phases, using lightweight steel frames and off-site volumetric units, reducing the amount of work done on the site and the impact on the neighbourhood.

They wrap around an enclosed, south-facing courtyard and have sun spaces to make the most of views of the Thames.

The society judges said the modern design improved the local amenities and made reference to the history of the site, in the choice of names Tramway House and Wharf House.

Orbit Group development director Maggie McCann said: "This award demonstrates affordable housing can be designed to the highest standards."
