A MAN is in a stable condition after being shot twice in broad daylight.

Rumours about the shooting and events leading up to it have swept Erith since it happened on Saturday afternoon.

The white man, aged 27, was walking along Fraser Road, Erith, at around 4.30pm when a dark-coloured Ford Focus car drew up beside him.

In the car were four or five black men, aged between 18 and 25.

One of them got out, and a row broke out between the two men.

The victim was then shot in the hand and, as he tried to escape by running off down the street, he was shot again in the leg.

The car drove off towards Erith Road and the man was taken to hospital.

Fraser Road was closed off as a police helicopter, officers and sniffer dogs searched for clues in the area around The Nordenfeldt pub.

A police spokesman said she was not able to comment on suggestions that the shooting was connected to an illegal bare-knuckle fight.

Local people have also suggested there was a second incident in the Thamesmead area the same day.

The incident is being investigated by Trident officers.

Anyone who witnessed it or has any information should call the Trident Incident Room on 020 8217 7355, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 to remain anonymous.
