Police call centre plan wins approval

4:55pm Wednesday 14th February 2001

Plans for a new police call centre in Hendon won approval from Barnet Council on Tuesday with the prospect of hundreds of new jobs.

The two-storey building at the Peel Centre in Aerodrome Road, staffed by 780 full and part-time workers, will handle emergency and non-emergency calls for the north London area.

Most of the new jobs will come from the civilian sector.

Commander Duncan Croll, in charge of the project, said the new centre would be part of a rolling programme of service improvements across the Metropolitan police district, called Command, Control, Communication and Information (C3I).

He said: "The aim of the C3I is to combine new technology with fresh working practices in order to make the best use of personnel by providing an even better service to the public.

"C3I will contribute significantly towards making London safer."
