11:00am Wednesday 14th February 2001

The Finchley ward by-election may see the return of a former Conservative Councillor to the Town Hall.

The Tories have chosen as their candidate Mike Freer, who represented neighbouring St Paul's Ward from 1990 to 1994.

As chairman of the now defunct Competitive Tendering Committee, he oversaw a number of council contracts being placed with outside companies.

Mr Freer is a director of Inter-Alliance (Chancery Ltd), part of the UK's largest independent financial advisory group.

He has also worked in management consultancy and retail catering.

The by-election had been caused by the death of veteran Conservative councillor Barbara Langstone. Polling takes place on March 15.

Chris Underwood, a lifelong Barnet resident, is standing for Labour.

He works in website development.

Standing for the Greens will be the chairman of the Barnet branch of the party, Gardi Vaswani.

She is a long time campaigner for green causes and works as achild minder.

The Liberal Democrat candidate, announced last week, will be Karen Hatchett.

Married with two children she works part-time as a marketing manager for a publishing company.
