The two sound stages at Elstree Studios in Elstree Way have reached their half-way point and are on target for completion by January.

Standing at 70ft high -- the tallest in the UK -- the metal framework is now complete making them visible from various points in Borehamwood, Elstree and Shenley already.

Studios consultant Paul Welsh said: "This is a very exciting time. They have reached a turning point and we are beginning to see the shape of things to come. When they are complete they really will be a landmark for Borehamwood and put Elstree Studios on the map for the new generation of younger directors who will use us to create great things."

The stages, which are 16,000 sq ft and comprise dressing rooms and office space, will be able to be used for medium sized feature films as well as lucrative advertising shoots. And even now there are "pencil" bookings from a number of production firms including a science fiction company.

Despite work being delayed due to the discovery of asbestos in the soil, things are on track and Elstree Studios will soon be a film centre for residents to be even more proud of.
