tHE Midland Bank Sports Day for People With Disabilities celebrated its 16th anniversary at Erith Sports Centre last week.

The fun day is designed for people with learning disabilities from Adult Training Centres across the south east.

This year events included adapted sports such as football, unihoc, skittles and tug-of-war.

There were also sideshow attractions, including a coconut shy, bouncy castle, fire engine and police displays.

The event was organised by Bexley Council, and is sponsored each year by Midland Bank.

Sports development officer at Bexley, Julie Fuller, said the event was as successful as usual. "It was a very good day and numbers seemed to be up on previous years," she said.

Teams from 13 centres took part with Carlton Resource Centre from Sidcup finishing eighth overall

Carlton's best result of the day was in the football, where they finished runners-up to Penge's Oakfield Centre. The final score was 3-1, with Carlton's goal coming from Bobby Austen.

Day service officer at the centre in Carlton Road, Mandy Hunt, said the event provided the chance for competition against other centres and to meet new people.

"I thought it was brilliant. Our party really enjoyed it - about 80 people from Carlton went to watch or participate," she said.

Sport is an important part of the curriculum at Carlton. "I think it's very important our members take part in the same sort of sports as other people," she added.

Other local centres involved were Ken Boyce Centre in Slade Green (12th), Swanley Day Centre (11th) and Smerdon Resource Centre, Belvedere, which finished third overall.
