Gravesend & Northfleet's 3-0 win away at St Albans may have flattered them slightly, but the win keeps the pressure on leaders Canvey Island.

They scored two goals deep into injury time and their first goal came against the run of play. But they still have four games in hand over the Essex side who lead the Ryman Premier League table by eight points.

Andy Ford's Fleet side started brightly and could have opened the scoring in the 11th minute, but Craig Wilkins, who had been put through by Simon Parker, had a shot blocked by defender Steve Cook.

St Albans were inches away from scoring themselves a few minutes later, when Paul Armstrong volleyed inches wide from the edge of the box.

Simon Martin went close after going past three defenders before shooting wide as the home side dominated the first half. But against the run of play, Fleet took the lead in the 70th minute when captain Jimmy Jackson stabbed home during a goal-mouth scramble.

It looked like Fleet were heading for a single-goal win, until the third minute of injury time, when Wilkins netted.

There was still time for another as Jackson scored again when his shot took a wicked deflection and flew over St Alban's stranded goalkeeper Richard Wilmots.

Fleet looking for new scholars

FLEET are now taking applications for their successful PASE Scheme for the 2002/03 season.

The club welcomes boys between 16-18 who wish to attend a two-year course at North West Kent College, where they will mix football with academic studies.

PASE (Programme for Academic Sporting Excellence) allows young students to work at their footballing skills with qualified UEFA B coaches whilst achieving a qualification in their chosen subject. If you are interested, call 01474 533796 for more information.
