READERS will be able to surf the world wide web in all Bromley libraries, thanks to a £350,000 cash injection.

The funding, from the New Opportunities Fund, is part of a £100m investment package for libraries across the UK.

The money will be used to introduce The People's Network scheme, which will make technology accessible to communities.

This will help Bromley libraries provide access to a wide range of quality information and external access to the libraries' resources.

Library staff will also benefit from the funding by being offered comprehensive training to ensure they can provide a higher level of service.

Conservative chairman of leisure and community services Councillor Joan Wykes says the latest grant is wonderful news for the borough's libraries.

She said: “Thanks to this lottery funding of more than £350,000, we are able to bring Bromley libraries into the homes of library users as they will have access to the libraries' resources through the internet.

“We are delighted to be investing in our library staff through training.

“Expert and knowledgeable staff will be essential for people wanting to take advantage of new digital services and online learning opportunities.

“Staff will be able to guide them through using equipment and help them find what they want from cyberspace.”

The announcement comes a week after the News Shopper told how a report revealed significant cuts in funding and a reduction in book issues.
