Hendon MP Andrew Dismore joined protesters outside the home of a Jewish man in Golders Green in a bid to shame him into giving his estranged wife a religious divorce.

Mr Dismore gave his backing to the Agunot Campaign and stood with members outside the home of Israel Elias, which is in The Drive.

Mr Elias has denied his wife, Susan Zinkin, a religious divorce or 'get' for nearly 40 years.

Without the get, any other relationship Mrs Zinkin, who is 64, enters into is frowned upon.

And any child she mothers would be branded illegitimate.

Mr Dismore is currently campaigning for a change in the law to allow judges to withhold a civil divorce from the husband until he has granted his wife a religious divorce.

He said: "I will be promoting my bill in October. However new legislation is a lengthy and uncertain process and in the meantime many women are still suffering, including the wife of Mr Elias.

"I joined the demonstration to show my solidarity with the campaign and to put pressure on Mr Elias to grant his wife a get."
