The London Games have been hailed as absolutely fabulous by the president of the International Olympic Committee.

Jacques Rogge said he was very happy with the event and very grateful to the organisers for their efforts.

But the IOC chief declined to compare London with other previous host cities, insisting such an exercise would be unfair.

"I am a very happy and grateful man," he said.

"I am very happy with the Games."

Dr Rogge said he would deliver his final assessment of the Olympics at the closing ceremony.

He said perfection was impossible so there were some minor issues Rio could look to improve on in 2016.

"Here and there things can be improved," he said.

"No one will pretend there is perfection in this world. I think the Games were absolutely fabulous but here and there, there are issues we can tell the Brazilians 'be careful for this, be careful for that' - nothing fundamental of course."

He said the British public had been "fantastic and exceptional" in the way they had embraced the event.

For very many years now I have had a theory that because the controllers/ editors of the many formats of news and media reporting in this country are hell bent on feeding the population with bad news instead of focusing on good news. It is almost as though we are been controlled and fed this constant dirge by just a very small few people at the top who want to keep us ‘down’ as a nation. The great British public are treated on a daily (even hourly) bombardment of deaths, massacres, war atrocities, terror threats, teenage stabbings, famines, civil wars, strikes, poverty, tragic accidents, wide-ranging unrest and general failures.

This is quite simply an awful basis to feed to the general public; and in turn the very same organisations seem to actually revel in applauding the so-called virtues of a nation who they then like to tell everyone else that we are all cynical, miserable, unfriendly moaners who don’t have any sense of pride in ourselves or our communities and who are happy underachieving, as though our great days are long behind us and we as a nation are perfectly content with this.

I have a very long held belief that the great British public would actually thrive far better if the people in power actually switched the focus of the media which would immediately lift the spirits of the nation. In recent years the one news story that I recall people making a good impression was as we all sat watching with joy and happiness seeing the Chilean miners all coming out alive. The next day several people spoke about this with great vitality and spirit – these are the stories we need to hear! How many times do you get to work and your colleagues actually bother chatting about the latest crisis in the Middle East or the desperate logging situation in the rainforest? No one is saying the other news is any less important, but for the sake of a nations psyche and mental health there is no question that a change to positivity from the dirge of constant negativity would be a wonderful change. Perhaps just a more even balance would help to put a smile on our faces.

The verification of my theory has been well and truly confirmed over the past 16 days of the Olympic games. All the media has altered because it was putting lead headlines all with stories of success, achievement, happiness, friendly fun, community spirit and harmony – to all intent everything that is positive to all our minds and that has in turn built up and added to the whole experience.

The situation of what the media controllers choose to feed us is widely responsible for the mentality of our existence in daily life, so in that respect they have a huge responsibility to ensure they have it right for so many reasons. We have proved all over Great Britain this year that we are a nation who are friendly, we are capable of been amongst the best in the world, we have great community, we like to show emotion and share our joy, we can celebrate as good as anyone on earth and have proved how successful being a united community really can be.

While the Olympics have been taking place there have been some tragic things gone on in the country and the world and they have still been reported but I feel the balance of priority of good before bad has been far healthier. The spirit we actually have is not reflected in the general media and the common way we are represented and treated is wholly off the mark and in fact it should be the media’s performance that needs to be addressed and improved into a more healthy frame of mind for everyone’s sake.
