BEXLEY'S council leader Ian Clement has resigned to become deputy to the new Mayor of London Boris Johnson.

He informed Bexley's chief executive Will Tuckley of his resignation yesterday (May 5) and it took immediate effect.

Mr Clement's new job as deputy mayor at City Hall will see him responsible for government relations, both in the UK and internationally.

As the holder of such a senior post, Mr Clement, who played an active role in the new mayor's election campaign, is not permitted to serve as a local councillor.

His job as leader of Bexley Council will be filled by deputy leader Councillor Teresa O'Neill until the annual council meeting next week.

Mr Clement, who represents Christchurch ward, was originally elected to Bexley Council in 1998 and became leader of the council after the borough elections in 2006.

He said: "I am very pleased the mayor has invited me to join his team and I am now looking forward to my new role."

He added: "I am sad to be leaving Bexley and the friends and colleagues I have worked with for the past 10 years, but I will continue to live in the borough."

BoJo might be a good laugh, but this man doesn't look much fun to me. Could happy-go-lucky Boris be a puppet? A front for all those ageless, dour and mean Tories we know - and certainly do not love?
Oh no, what have we done?

Don't include me in "what have we done". Of course he's a puppet - & not an intelligent one! As somebody who lost their job when Mr Clements took over in Bexley & started cutting services, I say to all you Boris voters - Reap the whirlwind.

Bad move, Boris. What does this guy know about government relations?! Nice trips around the world for the former leader maybe?

Sounds like Ken's administration already. Wonder which country this lot will do an oil deal with?

Oh dear - just two years elected as leader and Ian is abandoning Bexley for a cushy job working for Boris.

I hope the Tories' new leader locally will reverse some of the cuts to services.

Clement, originally from Erith, turned his back on his roots and took a safe council seat in leafy Christchurch ward promising to do his best for the people who voted for him. At the first sniff of bigger money he's off to a job alongside the new Mayor of London. Exactly how does this benefit the people he cares for so much ? This man would climb over anyone to further his own career - a distrustful, self-seeking opportunist, Tory to the core. He should be ashamed or his actions and the people of Christchurch ward shoudl elect a Labour councillor in his place. They wont as most of them are also Tory bigots.
