Voters go to the polls

VOTERS in London are heading to the polls today to vote for a mayor and assembly members.

Polls across the News Shopper region opened at 7am and will close at 10pm.

The results for the mayoral election are expected on Friday evening.

Nationally millions of people will vote in local elections across England and Wales where about 4,000 seats on 159 councils will be contested.

Two votes for mayor

The city has 5.5 million registered voters and there are nine candidates for mayor, including Labour incumbent Ken Livingstone, Conservative Boris Johnson and Liberal Democrat Brian Paddick.

Voters are given two choices for mayor - for a first and second-choice candidate.

The second-choice votes will be counted if no candidate wins half of the first-choice votes.

The two candidates with the most first-choice votes go through to a second stage.

All other candidates are eliminated and the second-choice votes are added to their totals.

The candidate with the most first and second-choice votes wins.

In the event of a tie the Greater London returning officer will draw lots.

The other candidates are Richard Barnbrook of the BNP, Gerard Batten of the UK Independence Party, Sian Berry of the Green Party, Alan Craig of Christian Choice, the Left List's Lindsey German and independent Winston McKenzie.

Fourteen constituencies

Bexley and Bromley and Greenwich and Lewisham are two of the 14 London constituencies where voters are electing assembly members.

There are 25 London assembly members: 14 constituency assembly members who represent different areas in London and 11 London-wide assembly members, who represent London as a whole.

You have two votes for the London Assembly - one for a local constituency member, and one London-wide member.

  • In Bexley and Bromley the candidates are:

    James Cleverly Conservative Party

    David Davis - Left List

    Ann Garrett - Green Party

Mick Greenhough - UK Independence Party

John Hemming-Clark - Independents to Save Queen Mary's Hospital

Alex Heslop - The Labour Party

    Tom Papworth - Liberal Democrats

Miranda Suit - Christian Peoples Alliance and Christian Party

    Steven Uncles - English Democrats

    Paul Winnett - National Front

  • In Greenwich and Lewisham the candidates are:

    Tess Culnane - National Front

Len Duvall - The Labour Party

    Chris Flood - Socialist Alternative

Stephen Hammond - Christian Peoples Alliance and Christian Party

    Andy Jennings - Conservative Party

    Jennifer Jones - Left List

    Susan Luxton - Green Party

    Johanna Munilla - English Democrats

    Brian Robson - Liberal Democrats

Arnold Tarling - UK Independence Party

    News Shopper poll

A poll on the News Shopper website currently has Boris Johnson on 60 per cent - ten per cent more than he needs to win the race for mayor.

Ken Livingstone has 13 per cent of the readers' support and Brian Paddick has nine per cent.

Ten per cent of readers have said they will not be voting.

I vote i wouldn't waste it, but lets be honest whoever the hell gets in they will never do what they seid they will do anyway, we need control in this country before it ends up in civil war, are streets are unsafe our health system in tatters, for one the amount of people that have come into our country without paying into the system just bleeds us dry and what do we do ALLOW IT, we are going to see our health system closed down and replaced with private, our housing is in a total mess with less able familys waiting up to 6 years for a three bedroom property. Why are we allowing more to come into our country when it is in such a mess, if only the ones we voted for done something about this instead of talking we might only have a great britain to be proud of no wonder the older generation are angry so would i be what the hell did they fight and lose their lifes for. ? for the hell hole of great britain. But for the record I would never vote labour again in my life after the mess they have put this country in.

I'm a white working class male and I had plenty of choice about where my vote was going to go. I can guarantee that thankfully it did not go the same way as yours. Voting for one of the (luckily) very marginal far-right parties - what a waste of a vote, I hope you're happy.

How did you vote if you were in Kent?

As for "surprises", funniest thing I've read in ages. The only surprise you'll be getting today will be when you see the BNP gets its usual minute fraction of the vote. The result will reassure all other people that the BNP will never have any power in this country and will never ever control anything.

hahaha quite funny that ! So if you support the BNP your only capable of writing big Xs in a box, well lucky for us thats all you had to do then. Sorry if voting for a party thats going to think about me and my family for a change, instead of other ethnic groups or immigrants that have only been in the country half hour. SORRY IF THAT OFFENDS YOU!

I used to vote Tory until the day they posted some election blurb through my door claiming they were responsible for getting extra police on the ward. This was simply not true, and I knew this because I was the extra officer who decided to enrol as a special because I was fed up with the yobbo's turning my area into a war zone every weekend. night.
