Job opportunities promised by Olympics
A ROADSHOW about how to benefit from job opportunities brought by the Olympics in 2012 will visit the area when it tours London.
The Get Set London Roadshow - a partnership between the Learning and Skills Council, London 2012, the Mayor of London and the London Development Agency - will visit all 33 London boroughs between January and April this year.
It is designed to give Londoners information about the job and skills opportunities available in the run-up to the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and to tell people and businesses how they can get involved.
The partnership behind the roadshow hopes to get an 70,000 people across London into work by 2012.
Temporary pods will be put up in shopping centres, parks and town squares featuring interactive sporting equipment and information on how musical acts can compete for a performance slot at the handover celebration in London in August 2008.
The Roadshow was launched yesterday in Trafalgar Square by the Minister for the Olympics and London, Tessa Jowell, Mayor Ken Livingstone and 2012 Organising Committee chairman Sebastian Coe.
David Hughes, the LSC's Regional Director for London said: "The Roadshow will provide Londoners with the opportunity to find out about the exciting range of courses and training available to them in their local area.
"We see London 2012 as an opportunity to raise skills levels and aspirations across London.
"Our aim is to provide people with the right skills so that they can benefit from the job opportunities that the Games will bring.
"By working with local communities through events like this, we hope to inspire people that are out of work or at a disadvantage to gain new skills".
Chief Executive of London Development Agency, Manny Lewis said: "Our goal is to get 70,000 people across London into work by 2012.
"The borough visits will also reach out to local business communities. We will be able to offer advice in preparing their services for the Games and how to compete for contracts in everything from construction and tourism to hospitality and technology."
The Get Set London Roadshow will visit
The Glades Shopping Centre, High Street, Bromley on January 22.
Woolwich town centre - exact location to be confirmed - on February 23.
Downham Health and Leisure Centre 7-9 Moorside Road, Bromley on February 24.

Ahh, the good old 2012 Olympic games, now there a great subject. Personally, i will never benefit yet i HAVE to pay for this total waste of money via my countil tax. i will NEVER use any of the facilities as i already pay a monthly fee for my local gym. The site is miles away from where i live. i simply do no agree that people have to pay towards something they are not interested in. Ok, some may say it will bring work to the area, fair enough, so tell me, as i would have contributed towards this are the facilities going to be free for me to use? i don't think so, what do i get out of this, nothing what so ever, that Ken Livingstone, what the hell do we need him for, we never needed him before, why now, he's done no good, think its about time the general public got together, and made a stand about all this, one voice and all that, might make some difference, make a stand, if we ALL didn't pay our council tax, what could happen, the whole nation thrown in prision, i dont think so..........
