RESIDENTS are pleading with Bromley Council to stop cars speeding down their road.

The speed limit in Kynaston Road, Orpington, is 30mph but homeowners estimate some vehicles travel at more than 60mph.

There have been a number of accidents in the past five years, where cars have crashed into gardens, hedges and walls after losing control on the bends.

Resident Joyce Way is surprised no-one has died or been seriously injured because of the speeding.

The 68-year-old said: "Who wants to lose somebody in their family? It should never be. No one should have to die before something is done."

The great grandmother added: "We have three schools near here. The mothers come up the alleyway and take their life in their hands when they go round the corner because this road is being used as a cut through.

"If we had just a few speed humps on the straight piece of road, speed cameras or anything to help stopping the traffic."

The road's residents now want Bromley Council to carry out a traffic survey so it can see why they think speed humps are necessary.

Mrs Way said: "They just need to spend one morning in the street to save lives."

The former lollipop lady handed a petition with 101 signatures to Orpington MP John Horam in September and expected to hear from the council after he gave it in.

A Bromley Council spokesman says in the last three three years there have been three personal injury accidents on Kynaston Road.

He said: "One of these was classified serious and the others were slight. Considering the length of road and the volume of traffic this is a very good accident record.

"Our criteria is to look at places where four people are killed or seriously injured in a three year period."
