YOUNGSTERS have agreed on how £1.3m should be spent.

A group of teenage commissioners was set up by Lewisham Council to decide which applications from voluntary and community groups should get the money.

They looked at more than 300 applications for the funding, which came from the Government's Positive Activities for Young People scheme.

This provides activities for youngsters aged from eight to 18.

The chosen projects included £3,848 for training in skills such as car and bike maintenance and £2,997 for music and media workshops by music tutors Point Blank.

Commissioner Jamal Wright, 18, said: "It was a tiring and delicate but also fun process.

"It made us work as a team in a professional manner."

The spending was agreed at a Lewisham Council meeting on July 9.

I hope these kids didn’t make any decisions but were guided to them by people who knew what they were doing. £1.3 million is a lot of money to get wrong. I must say it all sounds like expensive gimmicy nonsense to me and typical of the way things seem to be run these days – don’t tell me – all the kids were from deprived backgrounds and mainly ethnic minorities.
