Update: Teenager dies after gang attack

POLICE have said a 16-year-old boy was murdered after being attacked by a group of youths armed with knives and a baseball bat.

Shakilus Townsend, known as Shaki to his family, was attacked at around 1.45pm yesterday (July 3) in Thornton Heath.

Three boys and one girl approached him as he walked through the area.

The three boys attacked Shakilus, of Tanners Hill, Deptford, stabbing him and hitting him around the head with a baseball bat.

Police describe the boys as black, aged in their mid-teens, wearing hooded tops with the hoods up and bandannas over the lower half of their faces.

The girl is described as black, aged in her mid-teens and wearing a floral dress.

Police say from their actions after the attack, the teenagers seemed unfamiliar with the area, appearing to run in various directions looking for a way to escape.

Police and ambulance staff were called to the scene and found Shakilus suffering from a stab wound in a doorway to a block of flats.

He died just after midnight.

A post-mortem examination is being conducted at Croydon Coroner's Court and an inquest will open in due course.

Two knives have been recovered from the scene.

A murder investigation is under way, with a Homicide and Serious Crime Command incident room being set up under Detective Chief Inspector Cliff Lyons.

Speaking this afternoon, Mr Lyons said: "This is another senseless incident in which a young life has been taken away by a knife.

"Given that this happened outside a block of flats in broad daylight, I am certain there are people who have witnessed this murder.

"I would urge those people to come forward and speak to the police, to help us bring justice to Shakilus's family and friends.

"I would reassure those witnesses that if you come forward you will be dealt with professionally and in confidence by officers from the Homicide and Serious Crime Command.

"We have a 92 per cent detection rate for knife murders. If you come forward, your evidence will help take dangerous individuals out of your community and help deliver justice to the community."

If you have any information call the incident room on 020 8721 4205 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

When will they bring in an 5 year jail sentance for anyone caught with a knife!!! Thinking about moving to Baghdad heard it safer there.

This is just a dreadful state of affairs. Another teenager loses his life. When is it going to stop.
May he rest in peace.

The news report above says he was found suffering from a stab wound, but the BBC reported he suffered multiple stab wounds.
I wonder if it was the same sub human dog, that murdered the French Students.
There is certainly some deranged psycho's out there.
London is become a hell pit.

I forgot to add the BBC report.
A slightly different account.

All persons caught in possession of a knive or other lethal weapon, should be regarded as terrorists, for indeed, that is what they are.

Posted by: dontneedtoknow, South East London on 12:43pm Fri 4 Jul 08
I am a 17 year who has been on the streets for last 3 years now. I do not see the need to carry knifes or guns, if u want someone hurt then the least you could do is be bigger than use a wepon and use your fists, you will still be wrong but at least you wont be taking a life in the 1st place, people will always carry knifes, they do it to either feel safe or to just show their authority, the government cant to nothing to stop this, the more police you put on wont make a difference, this cannot be stopped as people will always be in crews and gangs and if your in that you will always have a knife to make you feel safe and fit in.

the only way this will stop is if you bring in the death sentence then people will think twice.

Do not be so stupid! The police are not taking anyone off the streets!! Goverment officials make all the ridiculous decisions from behind their desks, the police would have been the ones dealing with this awful crime. Some poor police officer would have had to go and tell a mother that her child has been killed, others would have to examine this lads body for evidence and others will now spend hours investigating this revolting crime. Family time will be cancelled, wives expecting their husbands home, will get a phone call saying that he will not be, etc.... How would you fancy going and breaking the news to that mother, or dealing with this!! LAZY... I don't think so, dis-heartened maybe, how is this crime being blamed on the police, why is YOUR comment directed at the police?? How THICK are you that you are trying to pass the buck from the person that stabbed this young boy? Is that how you live your life, blaming others for your mistakes? Bloody right this is not Dixon of Dock Green anymore, it is horrible out there now, idiots like you with no respect or understanding sitting in your armchair chucking mud in the wrong direction. Well, I wonder who you will call when you are in trouble. Please do not call the police! Get off your backside then and organise a rally, but do it for the right reasons, mind you I doubt you would want to move too far from the telly! Rant over.
As for the family of this poor boy, I am so sorry, and I hope that the wicked person responsible is caught quickly.

To right it is no good blaming the police for this governemts namby pamby stance on violent crime. The police cannot arrest hardly anyone anymore without being accused of 1 ism or another. Or being sued for handling someone a bit to rough. There is always someone who feels they are being discriminated against when it comes to stop and search. They have no powers left. how would you feel if you spent your life trying to make your area a better place but everytime you catch a criminal they get let go before it even gets to court or if it does get to court they get let off. talk about frustraighting. It should be mandatory 5 years for carrying a knife just like it is supposed to be for a gun. it is just as deadly, if you are carrying one you are obviously prepared to use it. put more police on the street take these pscos away or train them up as proper police because they dont seem to be able to do anything to anyone. they have less power than the police and the criminals know that.

But then why would we expect members of the government to help us to them they are just names and faces on a news story, if it was happening to their children i'm sure they would be much more pro active when it comes to catching these people.

Give the police back their powers. Get more police on the streets and less of them stuck in stations doing paperwork for someone who will most prob walk out of court to go on and commit more crimes.

Sorry for the rant but i could go on for hours.

Anne.

Well said Anne. Oh and with regards to the comment about the police expecting a pay rise that SHOPPER made, I was wondering what company that SHOPPER worked for, because he/she must be a fantastic employee to have NEVER have had or asked for a payrise him/herself... that is assuming he/she works of course. I mean, obviously SHOPPER can't have EVER have accepted a payrise or how could they comment on the police one. Oh and by the way, just to put it into perspective, the police did not get what they asked for, and even people on benefits get a 'payrise' every year, without even asking!!!! mmmmm run around after criminals all day, get spat at, stabbed, vomitted on, peeed on, hated and despised for trying to sort out everyones mess, or sit at home and play with your playstation..... tought choice.. Not fair is it? Oh and the police still pay council tax!

look you lot if you cant see that the goverment dont give a toss then your crazy / do you not read the papers? this week the police have been told to hit the motorist once again all the goverment think about is where they can make there next load of money to spend on themselves and their second homes do you not notice the police stop checks EVERYWHERE ? wouldnt it be better to have them bobbys on the beat instead of keep hitting the motorists? we keep hearing that they will get 5yrs for gun and knife crimes yeah right lol just look at the latest news in here ie man caught with weapons got its a **** take

I decree that all Met Police leave be cancelled and a weekend blitz on the areas where this knife crime is happening. All Major crime inititiatives be suspended and all fines imposed for motoring offenses be redirected to fighting this demon. Anyone found in possesion of ANY weapon will be sentenced according to the emergency sentencing law passed by me of 10yrs MINIMUM. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED. OR POLITICIANS, CARRY ON SITTING ON YOUR FAT ARSES VOTING FOR A HIDDEN PAYRISE.

Personally I don't have much time for the police. Like many people, they have not helped us when we needed them.

But on the other hand I wouldn't want to do their job for any amount of money. They have to face these freaks - scum -all day every day with their hands tied behind their backs. They can't do their job because they know some pc human rights tosser will object. They can't deal with certain people for fear of "offending" them, etc. etc.

If they do manage to catch someone, they can sit back and watch that person getting 200 hours community service? Or getting a pitiful sentence & that is then reduced by the minute. They probably feel whats the point in putting their necks on the line for the lily livered courts to laugh in their faces.

That is why we are all facing this problem on our streets today.

All of these stabbings are done by gangs not individuals but gangs. They are usually black wearing hoods and talk dike dis. When police do spot checks for knives do you think it might be better to target groups like this instead of private school girls in Putney like i saw on t.v the other day.

Good idea to send anyone caught with a gun or knife out to this war. they could be cannon fodder so to speak.

Lets see how brave they are when someone is actually shooting back at them.

i'm off out of this damned country at the first opportunity.

I want to see my kids grow up, thanks.

I know I'am not the only mother in this country that has a fear every time her child leaves the house..
I don't think Iam the only one who is forever on the phone to check and make sure they are alright.
The fear of god goes through me when one of them is late in because they were having a good time..
My children don't lead normal lifes in this country and many other youths do not due to the way the streets are here.
I know this sound silly but If I were in control at this moment in time due to the loss of so many young lives, I would put the at risk areas such as the South East on a regional curfew, with youths of up to the ages of 16/18 only allowed on our streets to a set time. We will then see who is controled by parants and who is not, yes It would take alot of man power but we are using or British Army over seas for the same reasons such as civil unrest why not here, For once we need to tell the other Countrys to go to hell and sort out our own so much is happening we need to stop in all areas these sad killings of our youth.
It can be done the police seem to be doing all they can, but such as in place's like Northern Ireland we should have the same here, we have got to stop being the good old strong british upper lip, yes i agree it won't look nice but I think if they want to practice their knife and gun skills let them try it on someone who is trained.
Please am I the only mother that feels we need this sort of action and soon.

I agree knife cime and gang crime/attacks should carry an immediate 10 year custondial sentence so people serve at least a minimum of 5 years in prison before release is even considered. Stop and search must continue and be increased where necessary. Knife scanners should be introduced in all pubs, clubs, schools and public buildings.I have been saying for months these gangs should be sent to fight in Irag and Afganistan. But was must remember unlike our brave service man and women these gangs are cowards with no guts at all and on there own could not fight there way out of a paper bag. We must now say now enough is and enough and fight this matter full on. THESE ATTACKS HAVE TO STOP.

I am a mum of two teenagers. I worry all the time, but one of my sons doesnt realise why I am the way I am. When he goes out the door, will he back? Will he get hurt? Its not fair on us parents and the responsible teens to feel so scared about the way this sountry has turned into. I cant even let my youngest son out due to the outside world. We need to do something now before the brats take over.

Has anyone seen the the Sun website? It turn out it was a "Honey Trap" some nasty little girl who it seems he had a crush on who set him up to be executed!!
He was attacked by about 5 youths with a basball bat and knives.

Don't get me wrong I do not think much of the pond life who executed this boy, but as for the girl what a nasty twisted little ***** she must be she needs to made an example of but of course our useless justice system will ensure the opposite.

even if they are locked up for a long time they got away with a street execution of an innocent lad.

The attack happened @ around 1:45pm but it took him until after midnight to die, just imagine what those last hours were like for this poor boy.

The "Law" is not worth knowing about as it lets the guilty do what they want then walk free.

The law is an ****...

And the government does not have the guts to take things like this on and sort them out.

This sounds to me like the postcode war, in which these children can't leave the area where they live without being victimized, people think it not does exsist, but it's real and it's happening in front of our eyes, boys from Charlton/Greenwich won't to Woolwich or Lewisham and vice-versa, it makes me sick to see how things how things have changed on the street of London, as for the girl, what an evil excuse of a human being, how can she posssibly live with herself knowing she lured that boy to his death.

They should all receive a life sentence and taken off our streets for good. The police and courts have to get much tougher and issue harsher sentences to thses gangs and anyone found with a knife, gun or weapon. ENOUGH REALLY IS ENOUGH. I agree with you 100%

BUT...

Lets face it when they get charged and it gets dropped from Murder to Mansalughter they will all be given a set tarrif i.e. must serve a maximum of 15-20 yrs, and a good few months later they will appeal against the convictions.

All the time being housed at our expense and not really having to worry about keeping a roof over their head or where the next meal will come from.

I am also a mum of an 18 year old boy, and I bet there are many mothers out there that when their child goes up the pub or clubbing they lie awake until they hear that key in the door. It scares me rigid when they go out and yes I invariably ring them to make sure they are safe, and I have been known to pay for a cab whereever they are instead of getting a night bus. We parents shouldn't be made to feel like this.

I agree with you. Its like the good youngsters are under curfew. None of them (or even middle-aged me) would dare to walk the streets round here at night.

These scumbags rule our streets, make us live in fear of going out at night, and our government and the courts are doing nothing to help us.

This country needs a leader with some balls, who will challange the current laws we have and get them changed. Give the power back to the police, parents and teachers, if someone breaks the rules, they need to be punished, it's the only way they will learn the difference between right and wrong. We have come too politically correct, the law is an arse and abused by low life scum, who have no morals or respect for anyone. I believe the parents of these animals must also take some blame, do they know or care what THEIR children get up to, or where they are?

Girls can be worse than boys. My 18 year old was lured out of town and when he arrived in his car there was several boys waiting to attack him and steal his vehicle. God knows what this poor boy went through. I just hope the parents get justice for what has happened to there son. My thoughts are with the family at this very sad time

Gordon Brown is NOT a leader, Jack Straw does not have the guts to do the right thing.

Magistrates for some unknown reason never seem to punish the guilty.

They are all in it for their own gain, And sod the rest of us who live in the real world.

It is what they do not what they say that is important.

I have just seen the pics of Shakilus brandishing a knife & either a firearm or a replica in a menacing manner, he is also using gang signs in a pose.

If this is so then maybe he had it coming, so it might be better if justice is not done.

Seems to me longer sentences won't do the trick. You had the kid who was convicted of murder for the Polish care worker getting a life sentence and he didn't even shoot the bullet. Most of these killers are getting picked up pretty soon after the crime. But the fear of getting caught and going to jail is putting no one off.

My son was 18 yesterday and went clubbing. Stayed awake with one eye open!. Couldn't sleep with the worry of it all, and I had to get up at 6 for work. Am I overreacting? Keeping my fingers crossed that he was home safe in his bed.
