Alarm raised over Olympic road closures
CLAIMS that road lanes may be reserved for traffic travelling to the Olympics have been dismissed as "alarmist" by a council.
Councillor Brian Woodcraft put forward a motion at the Greenwich Council meeting on March 26 raising concerns over national newspaper reports that some lanes could be reserved for Olympic-related traffic for up to two months.
The roads included the Blackwall Tunnel and parts of Trafalgar Road, Greenwich.
His motion said road closures in Greenwich should be kept to a minimum and, when possible, only on days when competitions are taking place.
Mr Woodcraft said the council should take a stand to help residents get around as usual during the games.
But Greenwich Council's cabinet member for culture and Olympics Councillor John Fahy said the motion was "alarmist".
He said: "In effect we're very clear in our determination to ensure that there's minimum effect on residents in the borough in terms of the Olympic Games."
