Man dies after car accident near school
 |
| The scene of the accident this afternoon |
A PEDESTRIAN has died and a woman has been taken to hospital after a car accident outside a school.
The incident took place at around 3pm involving a silver Peugeot and a white Toyota Corolla.
An ambulance took the man, who is believed to be in his 30s, to hospital from the scene near Crofton Junior School, Crofton Lane, Petts Wood, at around 3.13pm.
But he was pronounced dead five minutes later.
A 72-year-old woman was taken by road to the Princess Royal University Hospital in Farnborough suffering from chest injuries.
An ambulance, two fast response cars and an air ambulance were sent to the scene.
Crofton Lane and Towncourt Lane are closed.
The accident has caused congestion in the roads around the school and has backed up as far as Queensway.
Eyewitness John Lee, aged 40, said: "I was just driving down the road and I saw a white car overtake me on the pavement, and then it hit a pedestrian.
"I think the pedestrian was standing eating a sandwich.
"It's absolutely shocking, it really is.
"The driver was female, and after hitting the person the car didn't stop - it kept going and then it hit another car and then stopped.
"I saw neighbours trying to resuscitate him."

I was there shortly after it happened. I didn't see what happened, but I spoke to some people who did. The story I got was that a car was driving along and the windshield shattered, the mounted the pavement and hit someone, they were then hit from behind by another driver. There were a lot of police, paramedics and an air ambulance. The junior school wasn't allowing the children out, the parents had to go in and collect and the infants were late letting children out. No-one was allowed to walk passed, and rightly so. The air ambulance took off at about 3.40-3.45.

Thank you to Newshopper for your up to the minute news. We have all been quite shocked following the incident this afternoon outside my sons schools, and our thoughts and prayers go to the families of those involved.

I live about 3 houses along from the accident. My sympathies go out to everyone involved. Although there is no indication in your report as to what caused this accident or if anyone was to blame, this road is a serious black spot due to speeding drivers and the difficulty pulling out of Shepperton Road. Something has to be done as accidents happen about once every six months - you only have to look at how many walls have been knocked down or repaired. Thank goodness this wasn't 20 minutes later when the school was emptying.

I had the same thought Jason. As tragic as it is that people have died, if it was 20 minutes later the area would have been full of children.

Jason is right. This is a serious black spot with speeding cars and dangerous driving. Maybe now is the time to put in place a 20mph speed limit from Tudor Way roundabout right through to Place Farm Avenue at school time, just like they have outside Perry Hall Primary School - and get those cars booked when they park irresponsibly on zig zag lines! My thoughts are with the families involved. It is such a tragedy.

It was my friend's dad who was hit.
His name is Alan Beveridge. He was happily married with two boys, aged 15 and 12.
Don't keep referring to him as 'a pedestrian' because it breaks my heart.

Our prayers go to all those involved. Irresponsible parents parking illegally on zig zags, corners, yellow lines and on the pavements make the area a hazard for other motorists, pedistrians, and more importantly, our children. The poor lollypop ladies have to deal with badly parked and speeding cars every day. When will someone do something to stop this.

It is understandable that parents need to park near the school, and a degree of congestion is to be expected - as you would get at any other school at this time of day. However, what is not acceptable is the parents who park on the pavements totally disregarding the safety of others in order to be that bit closer. An extra 5 minutes walk is all that's needed but sadly it seems that over the past few years there's been an increase in those who have seen fit to totally disregard the safety of others by parking along this stretch of road on the wrong side from that where you can park and with 2 wheels on the pavement - clearly evidenced by your photo above - causing massive congestion for both lanes of traffic. This accident is absolutely terrible for all involved. Lets hope parents take note but sadly you can almost guarantee that within a few months they will be doing it again. Bromley Council should send traffic wardens regularly to book and stop these people. My deepest sympathies are with the families involved.

This is truly a tragedy. I didn't see the accident so cannot comment on it directly but there has been an accident waiting to happen outside the school for a long time. Inconsiderate people who seem only to care about getting their car as close to the school as possible without a care for those pedestrians and drivers who have to negotiate the roads surrounding the school. I am truly shocked that such a young man has lost his life and left so young a family. Should this not be the impetous we need to voice our opposition to the attrocious parking around the school. The council must surely take action after such a tragic incident. I shall be writing to them and to the local constabulary to urge them to take action.

My thoughts go out to all involved in this accident. I thought the emergency services and the staff at both schools handled the situation exceedingly well. It was also comforting to know that neighbours and passers by tried to help. I know that at least one Crofton parent tried to resuscitate Mr Beveridge.

We live down Bushey Ave and are thoughts are with the Beveridge family. I've often thought of writing to the council to put up a mirror on the lamppost accross the road from Shepperton Road so you can see traffic coming round the bend. Speed camera would be good as well; too many boy racers taking that corner at high speed.

My heart and soul is with all of you envolved. I ran out to help those who were hurt, but was so shocked and overwhelmed at what I saw, so I stayed back with my little boy. This shouldn't of happened but did. I don't know who was to blame but my anger goes out to all those inconsiderate lazy parents who can't walk those extra few meters to pick their children up from school. Parking with 2 wheels on the pavement or totally on the pavement is unacceptable. I've had many heated words with irresponsible parents when trying to cross Towncourt Lane and they ALL argue back thinking that THEY are in the right to park they way they do. Something has GOT TO BE DONE about this before it happens again.

Our deepest sympathy to the family and friends affected by this very sad and tragic accident. As parents who drop off our child at Crofton Infant School on a daily basis we have noticed several instances of dangerous driving and illegal parking. As an example, just this morning a driver in a small white peugot van almost hit a parent trying to reverse into a legal parking space, following which the driver of the van hurled abuse and gestures out of his window before speeding off, driving perilously close to several other parked cars. I can understand that the stop / start nature of the traffic around the school is frustrating, particularly as this occurs during rush hour but there are children as young as 4 (and younger given accompanying family) attending Crofton which is a very large school (c550+ pupils in the infants alone) and something needs to be done to make the area safer and more efficient for all road users.

Well Guess what. An Accident has happened at crofton school.
As anyone around here knows this is a traffic blackspot, with massive congestion caused by mummy’s not able to walk more than 100 meters from their cars, nor children to them. It’s not rocket science, just walking a couple of hundred metres won’t hurt you or your child, get them fit and overt the problems that happened today. Crofton Lane/ Towncourt is a major road. Let the Lolloypop ladies do their job and guide you to safer areas. Please can the council Double Yellow all of this as has been proposed in the past. Oh well votes count I guess??

This dreadful accident has, unfortunately, been on the cards for some time. As someone who lives in one of the roads near the school, I am only astonished that accidents occur so infrequently. Mothers park outside my house and those of my neighbours, partly or completely over our crossovers, every day. When challenged, the constant response is always "sorry, but I was late".
Clearly, their children are not that important to them.
Why can't we have some Police time to offer "words of advice" and to prosecute those selfish phone user drivers.
Perhaps if word got around that there are consequences for bad driving, it would not happen so much.
Love and prayers to the Beveridge family.

I am a parent and my child is at Crofton Infants I was sat in my car outside the school today legally, I fully agree that lots of inconsiderate people park illegally however we are not all like that. Did the accident have anything to do with illegally parked cars or was the driver driving without care? Thank god is wasn't 15 minutes later. My thoughts are with the families involved. God Bless.

I was in Adams class at school and i sometimes see him out and about in my road doing paper rounds with his brotherr

All of our thoughts go out to the Beveridge Family at this sad time. If parents are reading this please think about where to park in the morning and the afternoons. A 2 min walk is a low price to pay for safety.

My thoughts are with the family of Mr Beveridge.
I think we should not make comments on the driver until anything has been proved. If what you are all saying is true then yes she should not be on the road but we will have to wait and see what witnesses and police etc say.

Our deepest sympathy goes out to the Beverage family.
I recently wrote to the Council concerning the state of parking in Towncourt Lane and surrounding streets. To help prevent further accidents the Council really does have to sort out the parking around this school and its two dangerous bends.

This is a truly tragic accident and deepest sympathies go to anyone involved. However, the true facts surrounding the incident are yet to be established and we do not know whether the driver responsible was reckless or not. It could well have been that the driver had suffered a heart attack or a fit and lost control of the car, in which case, this is all very sad. If, however, it transpires that the driver was blatantly reckless then I agree with previous comments made. However, we must take care not to judge until the facts have been proven.

On behalf of everyone at Crofton Junior School I would like to send sincere condolences to the Beveridge family. Towncourt Lane has been an accident waiting to happen for many years - but why does a tragedy have to occur before awareness is heightened to this dangerous road. God bless you all - you are in my thoughts and prayers.

As an ex crofton pupil i also no the level of congestion , and the area is an accident waiting to happen
Apparently the poor ladys windscreen cracked and out of worry she steered onto the pavement - she didnt simply overtake him , so lets not through the book at anyone ,

I am very sorry for the sons of the poor, unfortunate man. It would feel like the end of the world if I lost my dad, no child should have to bury their parents. My thoughts for the family are very strong and I hope they can carry on with their lives with happiness soon. from Ben Harvey. 5N

The traffic in and around the schools at Crofton is bad, and yes, and accident was waiting to happen. I don't believe this caused the accident that happened yesterday, although I am sure the level of bad parking certainly didn't help. I found the quick action of the head teachers at both schools was amazing, in aiding the police and ambulance crews, and in also protecting the children from seeing the accident. My thoughts and prayers are with the family of Alan Beveridge - it is immensely sad, I am sure they have good friends and family around them to support them through this. Lets hope people learn from this, and park in legal parking spaces, and also to slow down and drive at the correct speed in built up areas.

Why are so many people trying to justify illeagal parking, are they going to wait until a child is run over. Irespective of the circumstances of the tragedy people cannot be allowed to park their cars completely on the pavement or acroos the grass verges it's the same culprits day in day out.

I live around the corfton area and it is extremly congested after school hours, there are many blind spots as cars park aorund the area. Cars also wizz around the corners, so most of the time you have to run across the road. It was an accident waiting to happen and im so shocked and sorry that it did.My thoughts are with the familly and friends at this hard time- nobody deserves it.
The council has some serious saftey reviewing to do.
RIP ****

72 year old woman driving? not eing funny but I was agreeing with my partner the other day that elderly drivers can be very hazardous. Its quite shocking to be honest. Its sad that this incident could have been prevented very easily. You pass your driving test because you are supposed to be safe drivers. I think people should have two tests; 1 20 years later. How sad!!!!
