Campaign to keep sports ground

A GROUP of residents are campaigning to keep a sports ground which is being considered as the site for a school's relocation.

The Friends of Hervey Road Sports Field will hold a public meeting in June to discuss the future of the Blackheath site, one of the places they say Greenwich Council is considering for the relocation of Willow Dene School, Swingate Lane, Plumstead.

Claiming to represent 1,000 residents, the group says Hervey Road sports field has been allowed to deteriorate since its clubhouse was demolished five years ago.

Now the Friends are calling for the council to invest in the site, used as a sports ground for around 120 years, as a facility for schools and clubs in the area.

Group chairman Susan Proudfoot: "We started the group because the residents felt there wasn't sufficient open space in the area already.

"Meanwhile we've got this wonderful open space which isn't being used."

The Friends met on March 16 to clear up some of the rubbish which has been left on the field recently, in the hope it would raise awareness of the field's deterioration.

It is currently used by Blackheath Bluecoat School, Old Dover Road, three times a week and Ms Proudfoot says there is plenty of interest from sports clubs too.

She said: "We don't wish to stop the school having new facilities but a lot of other schools are being redeveloped on their current site, not on a sports ground."

A spokesman for Greenwich Council said: "A decision has not been taken in relation to the possible relocation of Willow Dene School.

"Any future plans would be subject to a full and thorough process of public consultation."
