Indies aiming for share of vote

9:59am Tuesday 2nd May 2006

TOMORROW'S election will be made all the more interesting for the large number of independent and special interest groups which are standing.

The anti-phone mast Orange Squash Party is fielding just one candidate in Lesnes Abbey Ward while in Thamesmead East, the Thamesmead Community Party has a heavy environmental bias.

Many of the independents hope to vote en bloc on issue issues such as opposing increases in councillors' allowances.

Independents are standing in Cray Meadows, Erith, Longlands, Sidcup, Colyers and North End wards.

They include community names Graham Holland, Bob Griffiths, Mike Lowe, Simon Goding, Dianne Joyce, Stephen West and Rita Grootendorst.
