Councillors join calls to save Sydenham police station Councillors join calls to save Sydenham police station

LEWISHAM councillors have called on the Met Police to abandon proposals that could see Sydenham police station axed.

Back in January, a community campaign was launched to keep the building in Dartmouth Road open, organising an online petition that has 420 signatures so far.

Last night, councillors backed a motion from Cllr Chris Best and Cllr Janet Daby calling on the Met to "reject any decision to close Sydenham police station and to support the views of residents to provide local policing from a local base."

It is feared that a closure would see the area's Safer Neighbourhoods Teams relocated to Catford.

A spokeswoman claimed no decision had yet been made, saying: "We are looking at police estate requirements in Lewisham.

"Our aim is to improve the policing across the borough for the long term and looking at our property requirements is a key part of this."

I'm afraid common sense has gone out of the window in modern policing - the closure of local stations and the move to greater centralisation is all the rage at the moment. Give it time, the wheel will be re-invented and G4S will be building local bases when they've fully taken over the future privatised policing security force. Awful.

If anything we should be opening up more police stations... the present coalition Government needs to start getting inline with present public opinion... so ok they were elected to do things that benefit the country as a whole - but if you check out the latest stats things need a change of direction...
We have got continued mass immigration into this country at a level that cannot be sustained... we have criminal 'arrivals' of foreign nationals that end up in uk prisons costing the tax payers even more money...
According to the Daily Mail today, we take the highest number of asylum claimiants out of all the countries within the EU? why?
We also spend more money on overseas aid than any other EU country? why?
It really is blinkered to keep throwing money at Africa in the way we do of hoping to improve the situation in this continent when the majority of UK cash ends up in the pockets of corrupt Government officials... ( check out todays online Daily Mail )
The masses still continue to vote for those punishing the British electorate? why?
