Lewisham Council withdraws five houses from sale after squatters stage sit-in

LEWISHAM Council has been forced to withdraw five homes from sale after squatters occupied them, saying they should be used to house families in need.

In a bid to stop the houses being sold off at auction yesterday, protestors from Lewisham People Before Profit entered the properties on Saturday and have been squatting in them since.

Leading the sit-in is campaigner John Hamilton who told News Shopper the properties could be used to accommodate Lewisham families that are on the waiting list for social housing.

He added: “With such a shortage of affordable homes for rent is it a disgrace that the council is considering selling off these homes, and with reserve prices way below current market levels.

“Why should they sell off things that belong to all of us? The houses don’t need that much work and what we are particularly trying to push is that they should be refurbished with local people being trained while doing the work.”

The next stage, campaigners say, is to sit down with the council and discuss the future of the properties.

Leslie Faizi, a 42-year-old electrician, is one of three squatters occupying the property in Friendly Street. He said: “I think what we are doing is brilliant.

“It shows that direct action is the best way to combat the council. The council wanting to sell of the properties is disgraceful. I suspect strongly that they let these places go to ruin in order that they can sell them off.”

Mr Faizi addded that he does not know how long he plans on staying in the property and that it depends on negotiations with the council as to what will be done with the five houses.

People Before Profit campaigner George Hallam told News Shopper: “We are not trying to confront the council, we just want to be paid attention.

“We haven’t caused any damage and have been cleaning up the properties. We have removed rubbish and have asked the council for skip at the Lampmead Road house so that we can clear it out over the weekend.”

A council spokesman said: “"The council is disappointed by the actions of the squatters. Given its limited funds, these properties are uneconomic for the council to repair.

"Instead, the council intends to sell these properties to speedily release much needed funds to bring other council properties, which are legally occupied and in better repair, up to decent homes standard.

"Regrettably the council has been forced to withdraw the properties from sale due to the unlawful occupation by squatters. This will only delay the repair of other properties in its housing stock."

The five houses currently being occupied are in Lampmead Road in Lee, Angus Street in New Cross, and Friendly Street, Etta Street and Albyn Street, all in Deptford.

John Hamilton should be locked up. No place for squatters. It's totally unlawful. What right has he got?

Normally I would agree with people that squatters should be locked up. But on this occasion I agree with John Hamilton, why should Lewisham Council sell these properties. Why not ask a potential tennent if they are prepared to renovate the property. The council cannot be allowed too just about sell everything. Why is it the council cannot do them up under the decent home scheme. They must of saved money there because if your property is kept nice and clean, you do not qualify for the improvments, only those that keep it in a mess! Known fact....

What right does Lewisham council have to flog off properties at way, way below market value while its housing list lengthens out the door? Renovation would employ council-tax paying locals and restore the house for residence, or if the council did sell it'd get a far better price for re-investment elsewhere. The council is engaged in a firesale of properties which are in its care, not its ownership, and if PBP have raised awareness of this fact and prevented the worst-possible option being exercise then all credit to them. People should take action against authorities acting in so short-sightedly venal a way.

How can any one Object to what Lewisham People Before Profit are Doing?. Our Labour Council, had left these homes to rot for years, Homes that would have Produced £13000 per year in rent and £1300 per year plus in Council tax, On top of this Lewisham Labour council Spends £40.000 a year keeping just 1 family in B&B or Hostals. LPBP want to Use local People working with Skilled Traders to refurbish these homes getting people into work and Off Benifit, they then want to put Familes in Desperate need on the Councils own Housing List in them paying rent to the Council instead of Paying Rent to Rich Hostal owners. Lewisham Labour also had planned to sell our Houses Owned by Lewisham Tax Payers at knock Down prices to Developers, Even you you belive Lewisham Council lies, that it will Cost £40,000 grand to refurbish, They have no Mortgage,Does it not make common Sense what ever your politics, to Spend £40.000 once to bring a home back to use, than sell it at bargain basement price, to a private Landlord, who will then get rich of Lewisham Tax payers, but charging £25.000 a year to rent it Back..I have Today gone to see for myself, i visited Angus street NMew Cross, which would make a great home, Met the nice people from Lewisham People Before Profit, and made a cash Donation at the Come the revolution cafe they Run on New Cross Road Se14/Deptford..Labou
r gave up on these homes years ago, a bit like the way it has given up on the poor and only serves the interest of Big Business and Labour cronies,

@PaulErith,
in any case, what crime is Hamilton supposed to have committed? Squatting's not illegal, it's not a crime, not yet anyway, nor is incitement to squat.
