Lewisham has tied for first place with Lambeth and Southwark in the first Good Parks for London report.

The report, compiled by charity Parks for London, ranked the city’s boroughs based on 10 criteria, including public satisfaction with parks, awards for quality,  fitness and well-being, supporting nature, and sustainability.

Lewisham came out on top alongside Lambeth and Southwark, with each borough scoring 19.5 points.

Lewisham did particularly well in the strategic planning category, sustainability and community involvement, as well as collaboration with other boroughs and events.

Lewisham Green Spaces Forum chair Anne Slater said the group had a great working relationship with the council.

She said: “We believe that our established working relationship with the council has improved the management of the parks and green spaces.

“Effective communication is helping keep the borough moving forward.”

Parks for London chief executive Tony Leach said he hoped the report would serve as a benchmark for boroughs and local authorities.

“Our hope is that all local authorities will adopt the Good Parks for London process as an internal target to increase their scores year-on-year,” he said.

“The report can be used as as platform to promote the importance of parks in the face of budget cuts and bring together people and organisations managing parks.”

Parks for London aims to highlight the importance of parks and the good work of parks professionals across the capital, particularly to elected members, according to the report.

Lewisham’s parks were ranked among the best in the world last year, with 15 green spaces recognised by the Green Flag Award Scheme.

The international award is a sign to the public that the space boasts the highest possible environmental standards, is beautifully maintained and has excellent visitor facilities.
