A 50-year-old boxing club in Grove Park that was on the brink of being forced to shut may have spotted some light at the end of the tunnel.

Marvels Lane Boxing Gym has been at the site in Grove Park since 1962 and has trained a number of amateur boxers over the years.

However last year London Youth, who own the building, told the club that they planned to sell it and the club had to clear out.

A stay of execution has been temporarily granted to the club, as the original date of March 31 passed without them having to move out, but the prospect of being kicked out still stands over their head.

It would be a shame as according to John Lee, a chairman at the club, it is only getting more popular every day.

John, who is 76 years old and has been at the club since its inception, told News Shopper the club is packed with people young and old each of the three days a week they are open.

He said: “We get easily at least 50 people per day, 150 young a week. They are coming in off the street and because it’s boxing, they are being taught to do what they are told and they do listen.

“We are bringing in people who are autistic as well. If we go I don’t know where they would go instead.

“We are now running with boys and girls. Girls have started to come in and we even have a schoolgirl champion.

“We are getting so many in now, it’s really buzzing and I can’t understand why they would close it.”

A petition launched last year asking to save the club received almost 2,000 signatures but it looks like they will still have to move out of their current home.

While the club have been given until the end of June now, John believes they may have found a new home in Downham that isn’t too far away from their current site.

The club have gotten in touch with Goldsmiths Community Centre with the possibility of moving in there in the future, although John said they would need funds to make the site suitable for boxing training.

John said: “There is hope, it’s a really slim right now. They have a really big hall so we could hold boxing shows.

“We could do a lot with it and probably earn a lot of money for the club since we don’t really have a lot of money. We are doing our best.”

A spokesperson from London Youth said they are in meetings with the club and are working on a potential solution for them at another local venue.
