A woman trapped by a fire on the third floor in a block of flats in South Bermondsey was rescued by firefighters.

London Fire Brigade were called to the flats early this morning (April 12) to Island Road shortly after 4am.

Four fire engines and 21 firefighters arrived where they were told by a neighbour that a woman was trapped inside.

Watch Manager Mat Cole, who was at the scene, said: “On arrival there was quite a bit of smoke coming out of the windows of the third floor flat.

“We were informed by a neighbour that there was a resident inside the flat.

“Crews wearing breathing apparatus went into the flat and rescued one woman who was treated at the scene by the London Ambulance Service and taken to hospital.

“Crews worked quickly and efficiently to put the fire out which was contained to the bedroom.”

Fire crews from Deptford, Dockhead, New Cross and Old Kent Road were able to contain the blaze and it was under control within an hour,

The cause of the fire is still under investigation by the Brigade and Met Police.
