Residents of a home in Sydenham were woken up by the smell of smoke to find "arsonists" had set fire to their front door.

Police and London Fire Brigade were called on New Year's Day at 3.30am to a fire in Burghill Road and issued an appeal for witnesses this weekend.

The victims were awoken by the smell of smoke and went downstairs to find their front door on fire.

A spokesperson from LFB said they believed the fire was started deliberately as accelerant had been pushed through the letterbox.

There were no injuries but the front of the house had been heavily damaged by the fire.

Detective Constable Samantha Oram, attached to Lewisham CID, said: "We would like to speak to two suspects who were seen running from the location towards Mayow Road at 3.20am. Both are males and of slim build.

"We believe this was a completely unprovoked attack, in which, luckily, there were no injuries.

"I would urge anyone with information to come forward and contact the investigating team on 101 quoting ref CAD 1942/01jan or provide information anonymously through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."

No arrests have been made and enquiries continue.
