Heroic builders fought off a moped-riding robber who attacked an elderly couple with a metal bar in Croydon.

The two victims were on their way to a religious ceremony for their grandchild at The Archbishop Lanfranc Academy, Mitcham Road, Croydon, when Delon Reason and another moped-riding man drove at them and tried to grab the 75-year-old woman’s necklace.

Her husband tried to fend off the attacker who was brandishing a metal bar, and managed to get the attention of some nearby builders.

Police say builders disarmed the attacker and pinned him to the floor they arrived, while the woman fainted during this time as she was so overwhelmed and petrified.

Reason, 30, from Sheenewood in Sydenham, was arrested charged with robbery, possession of an offensive weapon, assault and possession of cannabis.

He pleaded guilty to all counts at Croydon Crown Court on October 2 and was sentenced to four and a half years in prison.

The offence happened on September 2 at around 10.50am,
