A murder investigation has been launched after a teenager was stabbed to death near New Cross.

The 19-year-old, named locally as Dan Namanga also known as Loni, is believed to be from Wimbledon and was a former pupil at Rutlish School.

Police were called at about 2am yesterday morning (August 8) to a disturbance in Old Kent Road, near the border with New Cross Road.

Officers attended with the London Ambulance Service and found a 19-year-old man suffering stab injuries.

He was pronounced dead at the scene at 2.50am.

Police believe the victim was involved in a fight with a large group of people outside a nearby venue.

Officers believe they know the identity victim but he has not been formally identified.

A post-mortem examination will be held and next of kin have been informed.

Five people were arrested near to the scene on suspicion of murder.

They were taken to a south London police station where they remain in custody at this time.

Detectives from the homicide and major crime command, led by Detective Inspector Domenica Catino, are investigating.
