A student who set up an online presence for a fake MP for the non-existent constituency of Greenwich and Deptford has been reported to police.

Ana Key is the pun-inspired name of the fictional MP with an official looking Twitter account and website.

The pretend politician is part of an “art project” by Ellen Kenyon Peers, who claims on her website to be the “first socialist party MP elected to Westminster”.

A student at Goldsmiths uni in Deptford, the 24-year-old activist says the Ana Key MP character “aims to explore real issues affecting people who live in Deptford and Greenwich where Goldsmiths' MFA studios are based.”

Neither of the real MPs for Greenwich or Deptford have taken the creation lightly and have reported it to police and parliamentary officials.

The Ana Key account has since been suspended on Twitter, but the website is still online.

The office of Matthew Pennycook, MP for Greenwich and Woolwich, said “such a website could affect the real-life cases of local residents who need the urgent assistance of an MP”.

Vicky Foxcroft, MP for Lewisham Deptford, said: “From a casework perspective I think this is extremely irresponsible.

"As an MP I deal with thousands of constituents with emergency cases, some of them about very serious issues on housing or immigration.

“If they were to attend the advice surgeries that have been advertised on the website, the details of which look to be copied from my own website, it would be breach of data protection and could cause harm and delay to constituents' cases - many of which are extremely sensitive and rely on urgent action."

Ms Peers hasn't been put off by the reaction to her fictional MP and has said she will make it clearer that Ana Key isn't a real MP through actions such as taking down surgery times.

A supporter of Jeremy Corbyn, Ms Peers isn't a huge fan of what Vicky Foxcroft has done for Lewisham Deptford and has been part of ground-level campaigns for more social housing in the borough and a higher minimum wage.

Speaking to News Shopper, she said: "The whole point of this project was to use a constituency that could come into existence if the boundary changes come into effect in 2018."
