A project to train over 55s to use tablets was launched in Lewisham.

The Mayor of London’s ‘Mi Wifi’ scheme will lend tablets to over 55s, members of community groups and people on certain benefits.

From June 2017 to January 2018 Lewisham residents will be able to borrow a tablet for up to four weeks and will be offered six hours of digital skills training.

The tablets will be available for borrowing from Lewisham Library, Downham Library and the Library at Deptford Lounge.

Deputy Mayor for Social Integration, Social Mobility and Community Engagement, Matthew Ryder, attended the launch.

In June he said: “The new Mi Wifi pilot in Lewisham is an exciting initiative to help people to find jobs, access their local council services and reduce social isolation by getting online through their local library.

“Digital inclusion is becoming more and more important. We know it can transform lives, particularly for those who are most excluded, including older and disabled Londoners and people from disadvantaged backgrounds.

“But too many still find it challenging and unfamiliar - we have to help change that. I look forward to seeing the project in action and finding new ways to help more Londoners reap the benefits of being online with the support of their community.”
