New homes, a central public square, shops and other amenities are being lined up as part of fresh plans for the regeneration of the Leegate Shopping Centre in Lee Green.

St Modwen, the owner of the centre, is preparing alternative plans which will be unveiled next month at a public consultation event in the centre.

The announcement of the new proposals follows Asda’s decision not to renew a pre-letting agreement for the large foodstore as part of the approved regeneration plans.

St Modwen is now in discussions with other leading foodstore retailers and is also looking again at local people’s priorities for the regeneration.

These alternative plans propose 390 homes, an open public square, and pubs and restaurants.

Killian Morris, a director at St Modwen PLC, said: “The new scheme offers us a chance to revisit what we’ve learned from consulting local people and the council over the past few years.

"London’s housing crisis has become more acute in recent years and our new proposals will focus on delivering more high-quality housing, including affordable homes, than in the approved plans.

“We still have plans for an exciting retail offer at Leegate, including a smaller foodstore, and we hope our new proposals for public outdoor space will be welcomed by local people.

"We remain committed to transforming Leegate into a thriving centre for Lee Green and we’re keen to see as many faces as possible – both familiar and new – at the consultation next month.”

St Modwen hope to submit a new detailed planning application to Lewisham Council later this year.

The consultation will be held on Friday July 7 between 3pm and 8pm and Saturday July 8 between 9.30am and 1.30pm in unit 15, beside the Sue Ryder shop, at the shopping centre.
