A baby was taken to hospital after a flat fire in Ladywell.

Two fire engines and about ten firefighters attended the blaze in Sandrock Road at 12.20pm on Sunday.

A man and a woman also escaped the fire and were taken to hospital with smoke inhalation.

The family were alerted by their smoke alarm and London Fire Brigade have warned how important it is to have a working alarm.

Watch Manager Keith Sanders who was at the scene said: “This incident proves just how important it is to have working smoke alarms installed in your home.

“Homes need multiple and linked smoke alarms or you won’t be properly covered. Ideal spots for smoke alarms include rooms where you leave electrical equipment running like satellite boxes, computers or heaters; any room where you smoke, and anywhere you charge your mobile or laptop.

“As a minimum you should have smoke alarms on every floor - in the hallways and the rooms you use the most, plus a heat alarm in the kitchen. They should be linked together and tested regularly.”

The fire, which was over by 12.46pm, was accidental and is believed to have started in a dehumidifier
