More than 200 cannabis plants were discovered in Blackheath after a resident alerted police.

Greenwich Police also found that the electricity metre had been bypassed when they visited the property yesterday around 2.30pm.

The resident became suspicious after noticing a strong smell of cannabis and strange movements of the occupant.

A spokeswoman for Greenwich Police said: "The bypass was very dangerous and could easily have caused a fire putting every resident of the block in danger, which has thankfully now been averted.

"The owner of the address had let it out without conducting due diligence on the potential tenant.

"Our advice is to always do full checks on potential tenants before letting out a property to alleviate risk of this kind of activity."

Enquiries to trace the suspects are ongoing.
