Firefighters are warning people not to leave their oven on and go out after a fire started in a Lewisham kitchen on Monday (May 16).

Four fire engines and 21 firefighters and officers dealt with the blaze on Conington Road.

Part of a flat in a six storey block was damaged by the fire.

There were no injuries as no one was in the flat at the time.

The cause of the fire is believed to be accidental, due to a cooker hob left on.

A smoke alarm in the property alerted the neighbours to call the London Fire Brigade (LFB).

An LFB spokesperson said: “You should never leave cooking unattended – if you have to leave the room or the house, make sure to turn the heat off.

“Everyone should have at least one smoke alarm on every level of their home and the safest option is to have those linked together.

“This will give the earliest warning if there is a fire in your home.”

The LFB was called at 8.57pm and had the fire under control by 9.41pm.

Fire crews from Greenwich, Lewisham, Deptford and New Cross fire stations attended the scene.
