Plans to build 22 new "affordable" homes in Downham have been approved.

Housing Association Phoenix Community Housing secured planning permission for the affordable rents in Whitefoot Lane, from Lewisham Council on Thursday, January 21.

Nine one-bedroom flats and 13 two-bedroom flats will be built adjacent to Forster House, an existing Phoenix development opposite Forster Park.

The housing provider also plans to create additional parking, and improve the outdoor spaces for new and existing residents.

The residential development is Phoenix’s second in the area, after work began to construct 60 new extra care homes for older people at Hazelhurst Court, near Beckenham Hill station at the end of 2015.

Phoenix chief executive Jim Ripley, said: “News on the housing crisis is everywhere at the moment.

“There are thousands of people on the council’s waiting list and we’re committed to playing a part in helping to meet the demand – and need – for homes at affordable rent.”
