A large tree was ripped from its roots by strong winds in a Catford carpark after Storm Barney battered the country last night.

The fallen tree was spotted at around 9am this morning blocking a road in the Homebase carpark in Beckenham Hill Road.

According to witness Jack Kennedy local PCSOs are on the scene waiting for the arrival of tree surgeons.

Across the rest of the country thousands of homes were left without power and rail passengers faced lengthy delays after winds of more than 80mph caused damaged and destruction.

Last night the QE2 Bridge at the M25 Dartford Crossing over the River Thames was temporarily closed because of high winds.
