Thin, dirty and dumped in a plastic bag a cat was abandoned on a Sydenham train.

Donald the ginger tabby was found three weeks ago by the driver of a train bound for Victoria.

He discovered the nervous moggy in a plastic bag left in one of his train carriages at Sydenham Hill station.

Four-year-old Donald was dirty with scabs on his face and behind his ears.

He was brought into Battersea Cats and Dogs Home where they managed to treat him, which included descaling and treating his teeth.

Donald is still with the home, which has experienced a surge of abandoned cats this summer.

MORE TOP STORIES Battersea’s Cattery team leader, SuiLi Weight, says: "Donald is just one of the many stray cats we’ve seen this summer who are sadly left to fend for themselves after being abandoned.

“The summer months are always busy for us as we are hit with ‘kitten season’ but we’ve definitely seen a real increase in admissions this year.

"Donald is now recovering at the Home, slowly gaining confidence and learning to trust people again.

"We’re helping to create a brighter future for these poor felines here at Battersea and we really hope Donald’s story has a positive ending."

Since January they have taken in 600 stray felines, a 20 per cent since last year.
