A man aged 18 has died and 17-year-old suffered ‘multiple injuries’ after a motorcycle crashed in Mottingham.

Paramedics from the London Ambulance Service (LAS) treated the teenager after the crash in Mottingham Road this evening (August 24), but sadly he died at the scene.

He is believed to be the pillion passenger on the motorcycle, which crashed near William Barefoot Drive.

A man, 17, was taken as a priority to St George’s Major Trauma Centre with multiple injuries.

The teenager, believed to be the rider, is said to be in a 'serious but stable' condition.

Police are appealing for witnesses after the fatal smash, which officers believed was caused by the motorcycle crashing into the traffic island.

A spokesman for the LAS, who were called just after 4.30pm, said: “We sent a number of resources to the scene including two ambulance crews, a duty manager and an advanced paramedic in a car.

“The first of our staff arrived in seven minutes. Sadly despite the best efforts of our staff a man died at the scene. A second patient was treated for multiple injuries."

The road was cordoned off at its junction between Dunkery Road and Chapel Farm Road, where the shattered bike and a tent can be seen at the site of the tragedy.

A neighbour from near Mottingham Road, who did not wish to be named, said: "There's a motorbike in the middle of the road, near a traffic island so it could have crashed into that. I heard two kids were on the back.

"People are assuming they're dead but the ambulance is still there. They were working on one of them in the ambulance for about half an hour we heard.

"It looks like a moped. Someone told me they were trying to overtake a white van then they went into the island.

"I think it was two young boys, both 17. They live up the hill."

The woman, in her 40s, added: "Police are here they've got their tape measures out, there's about six or seven police cars.

"We just heard loads of police sirens so we went out and saw the road being cordoned off."

Detectives from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit are investigating. Anyone with information should call 02082851574.
