A homeowner has described the moment he felt a “shockwave” ripple through his house as a bus ploughed into his front garden in Ladywell.

Alex Berka was fast asleep at 6.25am on Tuesday when the 484 bus crashed into the garden wall of his home on Vicars Hill near to the junction of Cliffview Road.

The 57-year-old dashed outside to help the five passengers and driver onboard the bus, who escaped unhurt.

Speaking from his home on Monday morning (August 24), he told News Shopper: “It was fairly disturbing.

"I heard the crash. I felt the shockwave go through the building.

"You get a lot of heavy traffic going over the hill, I just assumed it was some massive lorry but it turned out to be this amazing incident."

The bus, which was travelling towards Denmark Hill and Camberwell Green, was left with a smashed bumper and shattered windscreen.

The bus doors were blocked as the bus was wedged onto the wall forcing passengers to climb through the emergency exit.

Mr Berka said: “I talked to the driver afterwards who was in a state of shock.

"He was telling the fire brigade and the police that the steering on the coach had locked so he couldn't make the turn at the top of the hill.”

Mr Berka said it was lucky an early morning walker was not on the pavement when the bus driver lost control. “All in all, it could have been a lot worse,” he added.

“If the driver was travelling at speed it could have been a lot nastier.”

Mr Berka said he told police he was concerned about the junction six months ago after a car crashed into a lamppost next to his house.

"It's definitely a dangerous corner.

“Over the years I've had motorbikes crashing, things like that. I think there ought to be more traffic signage at the top of that hill."

Police and London Ambulance Service attended the crash, which Transport for London is investigating.

Lewisham officers (@MPSLewisham) posted on Twitter: "It's fair to say 'bus has driven into a house' is not an everyday call, even for Lewisham!"

Mike Weston, TfL’s director of buses, said: “A route 484 single deck bus, operated by Abellio, collided with a wall on Vicars Hill near to the junction with Cliffview Road. "Emergency services attended the scene. There will be a full investigation into the incident.”

Lewisham's bus drivers were proven to be the most accident prone earlier this year when a Freedom of Information request revealed more than 100 collisions involving buses in the borough in one month.
