Revised plans for the £117m redevelopment of the former Catford dog track site have caused concern with proposals for an 18-storey "landmark" tower.

The large block, looming far higher than any of the buildings nearby, is part of the second phase of Catford Green - a large development on the old greyhound stadium site near Catford train station.

Construction is well underway on the 589-home project - which has only 133 affordable units - following huge delays since it was first given planning permission six years ago.

Now developer Barratt London has put forward new plans which includes an 18-storey block - lowered from 21 floors after negative feedback from a consultation in March. The plans also include a new public square and children's play area.

Lewisham East Heidi MP Heidi Alexander said: "I do understand why people living in the immediate vicinity of the old dog track might be concerned by these proposals.

"I must admit I was a bit taken aback when I first saw the images of what it might look like. Having said that, if the building itself is well designed and the public space around it is of a high quality, I am not sure it should automatically be ruled out."

A Barratt London spokesman said: "As the first phase is nearing completion, Barratt London is now focusing on the second phase of the development; which includes enhancing the two entrances to Catford Green at the northern and southern ends of the site.

"The southern entrance to the site includes redesigning the tallest element along Catford Road in order to create new public realm and a public square to connect Catford and Catford Bridge train stations.

"We have held two consultation events and will be reviewing and evaluating all feedback received before proceeding. The tenure and number of units remains the same."
