A car ploughed into a bus stop yesterday on a "dangerous" Downham road, but its driver escaped without serious injury.

The accident happened at around 8pm yesterday evening on Downham Way.

A spokesman for the Met Police said the car's driver, a woman in her 30s, suffered only minor injuries in the crash, which destroyed the bus stop.

Cyclist Matthew Sparkes rode past the scene as police took statements from witnesses.

The 32-year-old said it was time speed cameras were installed. He said: "That road is so dangerous and I have to cycle it twice a day.

"It's wide enough for segregated cycle lanes. Maybe one day."

He went on: "A window of the car in front was smashed too and it was still there this morning. The owner won't be happy."

The road has seen a number of serious accidents in recent times, including a 13-year-old girl who suffered serious injuries from being hit by a car last October.

A previous incident last July saw a man in his 40s hospitalised when he was hit by a motorbike.

Ward councillor Coun Olurotimi Ogunbadewa told News Shopper he would raise the issue of speed cameras with Lewisham's Deputy Mayor but pointed out the road was controlled by Transport for London.
