Teachers will walk out on a two day strike next week in a continuing dispute over academisation of Lewisham schools.

Unions say they are "deeply disappointed" that the Leathersellers’ Federation Governing Board, which runs the Prendergast group of schools, has started its formal consultation on academy conversion.

Along with a march against the plans tomorrow (March 21), starting from Lewisham clocktower at midday, they now plan a two-day walkout on March 24 and 25.

In a statement, unions the GMB, NASUWT and NUT said: "While our action may temporarily disrupt students' education, we believe that the long-term consequences of an academy conversion will cause long-lasting and permanent damage to education in the Federation and beyond.

"Unions believe that we have a responsibility to take action to oppose this damaging proposal. Our action will again show the strength of feeling amongst staff against the proposed academy conversion.

"As well as making clear our deep concerns about the potential threat to staff pay, conditions and trade union facilities, we hope that our action will also make parents and the local community understand how vital it is that they speak out against the proposals during the upcoming consultation period."
