A popular Catford community centre is being closed "for the foreseeable future" after a large amount of asbestos material was found.

The Goldsmiths Community Centre in Castillon Road was originally closed temporaily on February 26 so asbestos testing could be carried out.

But, although it managed to re-open the George Green Hall a week later, the centre's trustees now say too much asbestos has been found to remain open.

In a statement, the trustees said the centre would close from March 30 for the foreseeable future.

They said: "The amount of asbestos-containing material that has been found in the building was significantly greater than had been realised and it is not viable for us to keep the centre open with so many restriction in place.

"We hope that you understand that the state of the building and the amount of work requires to return it to use is beyound our control and not anybody's fault.

"Id we felt we had any alternative to closing our doors then we would have done so."
