Six police officers who cleaned a Lewisham war memorial after it was attacked by arsonists have been awarded for their actions.
Officers were called to the Lewisham Way memorial after being flagged down by a passer-by at 3.47am on July 30 last year - days before the 100th anniversary of the First World War breaking out.
The Fire Brigade was called out, extinguishing the fire, although some damage was caused to the memorial.
And, instead of leaving, the police officers stayed on, donned rubber gloves, and cleaned it for several hours.
All six of the the officers received a Citizenship certificate award from the Mayor of Lewisham for their actions this week.
