Safety improvements will be made on a Lewisham road following a fatal collision last Summer.

Yun-Yi Chen, a 13 year old schoolgirl from Taiwan, was killed after being hit by a lorry near a zebra crossing in Brownhill Road on July 16 last year (2014).

Caroline Pidgeon, chair of the London Assembly Transport Committee has received specific assurances from Transport for London that they will make improvements to the zebra crossing on Brownhill Road.

She said: "The death of the schoolgirl last Summer has acted as a real spur to local residents to ensure that much needed improvement are made in crossing the South Circular.

"I can only congratulate the determination and campaigning work of Catford residents to ensure that road safety has a far higher priority."

Ms Pidgeon visited the Brownhill Road where Natasha Clarkson, a local road safety campaigner, highlighted the many dangers to pedestrians.

Following the visit Ms Pidgeon highlighted a number of areas where pedestrian safety could be improved to TfL.

She added: "We have a long way to go in making this stretch of the South Circular far safer for pedestrians, but this is a good start."

In response to the evidence supplied by Ms Pidgeon, TfL are planning to install two advance warning signs to warn drivers of the zebra crossing at Brownhill Road.

They hope to have these installed within the next to 10 to 12 weeks and are also planning to make the zebra crossing lights more visible.

A response provided by Tfl read: "After recent events and a petition signed by local residents we are to include this location in our 2015/2016 annual programme of road safety reviews.

"As part of this, we will review the safety record of Brownhill Road, which includes the existing zebra crossing at its junction with Stainton Road.

"The review will be completed by January 2016."
