A New Cross school is celebrating the completion of its rebuilding project after a fire in 2010 destroyed the school site.

Haberdashers’ Aske’s Temple Grove School will begin the new-year back at its Hunsdon Road address after disaster struck more than four years ago.

A propane canister exploded while the school was being refurbished during the Easter holidays - no children were present at the time.

The project has taken some years to complete but now it is finally ready.

Headteacher Jack Charlton said: "It’s great to have a permanent and truly local school again for parents.
"The new building is so cheery and bright and we’ve got more space than we’ve had anywhere else."

Lessons were moved to the Mornington Centre on Stanley Street while the reconstruction was carried out.

Mr Charlton reflected: "We’ve had a couple of moves now and it’s been difficult to settle, but the children and staff have done remarkably well, we are all used to moving now."

Temple Grove is the feeder primary school for Haberdashers’ Aske’s main Hatcham College School based at two nearby sites in New Cross. In total the school teaches 1,800 students between the ages of three and 16.
