An unexpected distress call led to two Lewisham police officers helping to bring a child into the world.

Clare Hartnell of Broadfield Road in Catford, was home alone on January 4 when her waters broke and she went in to labour.

After having contractions for nearly an hour Clare dialled 999 for assistance after a taxi she booked didn't turn up.

Luckily, PC Terry Powell and PC Andy Collins from the Lewisham Emergency Response Team were in the area and immediately attended the address PC Powell said: "This was a truly amazing call to attend and one I won't forget.

The officers were prepared to break down the door, but Clare managed to crawl to her front window where she threw her keys to the officers to open the door.

By the time the officers arrived, the baby was in a breech position and Clare was in excruciating pain.

PC Powell took control of the baby who was fit and healthy, and PC Collins assisted in getting towels and medical items for a solo responder from the London Ambulance Service, who arrived after the officers.

Clare said: "I just want to say a massive thank you to the police officers who attended, they even advised me on how to get the blood out from the carpet.

"I'm so happy I got the opportunity to thank them both, it was quite scary giving birth alone but as soon as the team turned up they put me at ease."

PC Powell added:"It's nice that Clare has been so thankful but it really is down to her, her actions ensured no harm came to her or her daughter.

"I am sure in years to come her daughter will realise how lucky she is to have a mum who is willing to do anything to keep her safe."

Baby Beatrice was born at 6:39pm on January 4 weighing a healthy 5lb 5oz.

Both mother and baby were taken to Lewisham Maternity ward for two days before being discharged.
